THE SAMARIA GORGE
One of the major attractions of Western Crete is the high mountains and gorges of the Lefka Ori. With over forty peaks rising above 2,000m it is a draw for many walkers and climbers who relish a challenge.
One challenge that many people complete each year is the 16Km walk of the Samaria Gorge, the longest continuous gorge in Europe. Starting near the fertile plateau of Omalos in the heart of the mountain range, visitors descend the XylokSkala or wooden staircase to the gorge floor. the walk then follows the path of the gorge through 'The Iron Gates', where with outstretched arms you can almost touch each side of the gorge, and finally to reach Agia Roumelli for a well earned cold drink and a dip in the sea. |
